Dr. Derek Surdez, MD

Dr. Surdez was born and raised in Sabetha, a small town in Northeast Kansas. He attended Kansas State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology. Dr. Surdez went to medical school at the University of Kansas and completed his Family Medicine residency training at Via Christi in Wichita. His interest in medicine began during his father’s long battle with pancreatitis and grew into a compassion for the sick and suffering. He is passionate about Direct Primary Care because it allows him to build relationships with his patients, take time to really listen, and make sure all of their needs are addressed. Outside of medicine, some of Dr. Surdez’ passions include swimming in the ocean, making good coffee, listening to For King and Country, and spending quality time with his wife, Emma, and 3 year old son.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s DPC?

DPC stands for Direct Primary Care which is a membership model of healthcare that puts the patient first by eliminating the need to bill insurance for routine medical needs. This model gives you access to same or next day appointments, decreased waiting room times, and more face to face time with your doctor.

Is concierge medicine the same as Direct Primary Care?

Direct Primary Care and concierge medicine are similar in many ways, primarily being the goal of providing excellent, accessible health care for the patient. This means that as a Direct Primary Care member, you will have access directly to your physician 24/7, appointments that aren’t rushed allowing you to address all your questions or concerns, and the time for preventative care to improve your quality of life. The primary misconception with concierge medicine is that it is not accessible to all. We want Direct Primary Care to be accessible and our prices reflect that.

What sets Agape DPC apart from other practices?
The model of Direct Primary Care offers many benefits that most people don’t experience when going to their primary care doctor. As a patient at Agape DPC, our goal is for you to feel like your health is our priority and that is reflected in the time we spend with you. In the traditional model of medicine, physicians spend many hours on insurance paperwork. Our vision is to give this time back to our patients. Instead of feeling rushed out of the exam room, we want you to have all the time you need to ask questions and discuss your care.

What happens if I need to go to the hospital or see a specialist?

In line with our goal of improving your overall quality of health, we look to prevent or decrease hospitalization and speciality referrals. In cases where hospital or speciality care is necessary, we will seek to work with your hospital care team or with any specialist. In some cases, the best care can be provided by specialized caregivers, and we will rely on their expertise.

Will I benefit from Agape DPC if I don’t require frequent medical attention?

Absolutely. Our care is focused on the whole person and designed to meet your individual needs. One of our main goals is to work with you on preventative healthcare so that as a team we work toward a high quality of life for you as an individual.

In the traditional model of healthcare, individuals often overlook or don’t prioritize their health because it is not something that feels accessible to them. As a member of Agape DPC, you will have unlimited access to our knowledge as primary care providers. We love teaching our patients so that you are able to take on more of an active role in your health.

Does Agape DPC accept health insurance?

We are happy to say that we do not accept insurance. By not accepting insurance, we are freed from the demands placed on health care from insurance companies. For you, the patient, this means that we have more time to spend with you. It also means that as a team, we are able to make the best decisions regarding your healthcare without input or restrictions from insurance companies. We are invested wholeheartedly in your health, something that is difficult for large insurance companies.

Additionally, by not accepting insurance, we are able to provide wholesale or at cost prices for laboratory tests, imaging, and medications.

As a patient of Agape DPC, will I still need health insurance?

Yes. While we don’t accept insurance, we advise our patients to continue with or sign up for a healthcare plan with a high deductible and a health savings account. This provides peace of mind and financial help should a hospitalization or referral to a specialist be necessary. We are happy to discuss this more and provide recommendations for companies that offer these types of plans.
